It's a bit mind-boggling thinking about how these mama pandas can still provide everything for their young need to thrive and grow into adulthood. She also provides them with food and other necessities until they are able to forage for food themselves. It is during this time that the mother teaches them how to survive. The days before the cubs’ independence is a very important part of their development. It takes about 90 days before her baby cubs can venture out of their birthing nest and discover the world on their own. The mama panda cares for all her younglings without assistance from anyone. Once she's done with mating, the female proceeds to give birth to her cubs alone. Their competition is quite a spectacle to observe. When this happens, males begin to vie for the attention of the other sex. When born, the babies resemble little cotton balls, which is a sight to behold.įemales usually mate at a rate of once a year and only during the breeding season. However, all this extra time is necessary to properly develop the baby cubs. It takes them about 135 days to develop in the womb, which is quite a long time considering how small they are. They are most active at night, dusk, and dawn.Īnother fun fact about these furballs is their gestation period. The female is constantly chased by multiple males until she chooses one to mate with over the course of several days. They are also solitary beings for the majority of the year except for mating season, when females seek out males for courtship. They don't hibernate during winter they just double up on sleep! They spend most of their time lounging around in the treetops either eating or taking a nap. They live mostly in trees in Southwestern China and the Himalayas region of Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Red pandas love slurping on honey as well, which is why certain farmers used to keep them as pets. They don't use tools like other animals do, so they have to use their claws and teeth to get at hard-to-reach food. They even consume insects! Still, they mostly use bamboo leaves, which is about 95% of their diet. As if that wasn't enough, they sometimes dabble in small birds or rodents. These beasts consume a multitude of things, from fruits to eggs. Did you know that these cuddly-looking animals aren’t actually related to pandas at all? They have their own unique diet and habits that set them apart. Red pandas are one of the most unique creatures you can find in nature. Unfortunately, they aren’t currently found elsewhere due to deforestation and other activities disturbing the natural habitat. Beyond the Himalayas, red pandas can sometimes be spotted in the mountains of Sichuan or Vietnam. These solitary animals prefer cooler climates with plenty of trees and vegetation for them to climb on. Though they can prove elusive in their natural habitats, they can often be found in temperate bamboo forests at elevations of 5,000 to 15,000 feet. You might have seen a picture of a red panda, but where do they live? Red pandas are native to the Himalayan mountain range, primarily in parts of southern China, northern Myanmar, and India. It's clear that red pandas are very special indeed! Zoo Or The Wild: Where Do We Find Them? The average lifespan of a red panda is eight to ten, although it might differ depending on whether they live in the wild or are contained in captivity. They measure around twenty to twenty-five inches in length, including tails. Red pandas weigh about six to fourteen pounds. Red pandas are much smaller than giant pandas. Its scientific name is Ailurus fulgens which means "fire-colored cat" in Latin. Red pandas have thick reddish orange-brown fur, short furry tails, and small round ears that make them resemble a combination of a bear, a skunk, a cat, and a raccoon. After all, there's a reason why they have been christened the superstars of Instagram. It's an adorable mammal native to the Himalayas and southwestern China, and they are gaining more and more attention lately. They were originally thought to be related to the giant panda and the raccoon, but right now, red pandas belong to their own distinct family…the Ailuridae. What exactly is a red panda? Biologists actually aren’t 100% sure.
